| "I Wanted To Make a Difference" |
|
In a successful 16 year career as a police officer, I have had the opportunity to work in a wide variety of operational assignments including: patrol, organized crime, surveillance teams, bike patrol, Intelligence Unit and have been a supervisor for uniform and plain clothes teams. I joined because I wanted to make a difference and I wanted a job that would have excitement, thrills, and something different every day! I wanted the camaraderie of a team and the uniqueness of a family. This job is rewarding, exciting and everyday is a new adventure.
Being exposed to many diverse assignments, I have had the opportunity to experience various aspects of policing. The daily excitements have been endless: working with the Emergency Response Team, policing “high in the sky”, executing a variety of search warrants, homicide arrests, liaising with National and International agencies, lead investigator on large scale files, tracks with K-9 officers, foot pursuits, and working with community members. There are endless opportunities in policing. Some of my future aspirations with the West Vancouver Police Department are to work patrol, intelligence, Integrated Gang Unit, and to teach at the police academy.
Being a police officer is also being part of the community. During my career I have been able to pursue my other passion of working in close liaison with the community on numerous projects. I have participated in many police and community events including: accompanying youth on camping trips and basketball tournaments, and one of the most rewarding, the Tour de Rock - Cops for Cancer Ride where we raised money for cancer research, which has become the most successful fund raising events for the BC Cancer Agency.
I developed the Victoria Police Department's Diversity Unit and while working with other Lower Mainland Departments we developed the Provincial Police & Diversity Network Committee. I have been a key note speaker and panel presenter at various community and policing conferences as well at the JIBC.
My policing career originally started with the Victoria Police Department and I recently joined the West Vancouver Police Department. I chose the West Vancouver Police Department for a number of very exciting reasons; I wanted to go to a police agency where proactive policing is encouraged. Where I could work actively within the community and have the opportunity to follow through with my investigations. The West Vancouver Police Department met these needs. From my first visit to the department the staff members were friendly, caring and I immediately recognized the camaraderie within the organization. The Department has been accommodating and understanding of my needs and future goals. It is also very exciting to be working in a venue city for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
I grew up in Richmond and graduated from Mathew McNair Secondary. After graduation I enrolled in the Criminology program at Kwantlen University and later attended SFU. Currently I am taking university courses and the department has been supportive of my continuing education.
I love the west coast and the outdoors is a big part of my life. I wanted to go to a police department and city where I would be close to the mountains, water and have easy access to great running and walking trails, and West Vancouver meets these needs. I have completed 7 marathons, 3 duoathalons, and numerous ½ marathons. I competed in the World Police and Fire Games and have taught aerobics. Some personal accomplishments include being honored with Women of Distinction Award for Leadership in the Workplace and the ability to speak 4 languages.
As you can imagine a career in policing can take you through many different and exciting journeys. If you want the challenges, excitement and something unique everyday, policing is the career for you. More importantly, if you want to join a police department with diverse units, camaraderie, the ability to investigate and be proactive, West Vancouver Police Department is for you! Truly the West Vancouver Police Department is an effective, efficient and ethical police organization and I am proud that I have been given the opportunity to serve the Citizens of West Vancouver.
