| Fatal Collision During Enhanced Enforcement Week |
The West Vancouver Police department is appealing to motorcyclists to seriously consider their safety after a fatal accident Sunday. Sadly, the accident occurred at the conclusion of a week long special enforcement campaign that targeted motorcyclists.
Last week, in response to the high volume of public complaints regarding motorcycles, their use, racing, poor riding and excessive noise, the West Vancouver Police Department Traffic Section began a week of heightened motorcycle traffic enforcement. The aim of the extra vigilance was both enforcement and education. By the end of the week, dozens of motorcyclists had been spoken to, tragically however, the week still ended with a fatal motorcycle accident on Marine Drive, in West Vancouver. On Sunday July 6, 2008 a 39 year-old male, who had only just arrived on the North Shore after moving from Washington State, was killed when his motorcycle collided with the cliff face in the 4000 Block of Marine Drive West Vancouver.
Witnesses to the collision have stated that moments before the collision the vehicle was travelling at excessive speed, crossing the solid lines and passing other motorists in an unsafe manner.
In an effort to improve road safety for everyone, the West Vancouver Police Department will continue the enforcement and educational drive on the North Shore.
In 2007, West Vancouver enacted a new bylaw that allows police to issue tickets for any motor vehicle which emits excessive noise. In addition, officers are being trained to recognize illegally equipped motorcycles. The West Vancouver Police Department’s Traffic Section is also working with Motorcycle retailers advising them on their liabilities in relation to any equipment that they fit. |
