Fraudulent Canvassers using handheld client card reading machines

The West Vancouver Police want to advise area residents of another fraud scam.

Individuals throughout the Lower Mainland are posing as canvassers for the Canadian Cancer Society and are using hand held portable Trojan terminals with a pretense of collecting money. They have also been using the portable Trojan terminals to sell Spa Utopia gift Certificates.

The Trojan terminals equipped with Blue-tooth technology enable the alleged canvassers to acquire personal private data from your client card; they then emboss and use that information on a counterfeit card where they are now able to access funds in your bank account and/or charge up your credit cards.

If canvassers attend your residence ask them if they have a letter from The West Vancouver Bylaw Section authorizing them to conduct business in West Vancouver. If the canvassers do not have a letter from the Bylaw Section, they are not permitted to conduct business in West Vancouver.
