A collision resulting in damage to an overpass in West Vancouver Wednesday morning helped demonstrate the potential of the newly launched West Vancouver District Watch program.

A truck hauling a backhoe struck an overpass in the 800 block of Marine Drive Westbound shortly before 9am. The vehicle's driver briefly stopped, then drove away without reporting the incident.

Witnesses called West Vancouver Police with a brief vehicle description. Police dispatchers activated a District Watch fan-out to mobile District of West Vancouver employees.

West Vancouver District Watch - Program Background

Within 24 minutes, Police received a call from workers on a municipal crew that had spotted the vehicle in the 100 block of 25th Street. The vehicle and driver were subsequently located and identified, allowing officers to quickly conclude the investigation.  The driver has been served a Provincial Violation Ticket in relation to the collision.

The structure was deemed safe for traffic to pass underneath. Vehicle traffic will be restricted from the overpass until a thorough check of the structure is completed.
