West Vancouver Police, Squamish RCMP, the Integrated Road Safety Unit (IRSU) and ICBC are gearing up for an enforcement campaign to get you safely from summer into September.

Police around BC are set for enhanced traffic enforcement throughout the Labour Day Long Weekend, carefully aiming laser and radar speed detection units to target speeding and aggressive drivers that put all highway travellers at risk.

West Vancouver Traffic Services members will work adjusted hours to join Patrol Team members and officers from RCMP and IRSU to target the highway travellers from Vancouver through the Highway #99 Sea to Sky Corridor.

Driving habits that include aggression and speed dramatically increase the risk of causing a crash, and the chance of being involved in a crash is highest on Fridays and weekends. Long weekend traffic poses an even greater risk.

Statistics assembled by ICBC show the three-day Labour Day long weekend - based on five-year average - typically sees 1,660 crashes, 550 injuries and five fatalities.

Beyond the human cost, ICBC puts the annual financial price of Labour Day crashes at more than $15 million.
