EXCESSIVE SPEEDING IS A COSTLY MISTAKE

On January 11, 2012 members of the West Vancouver Police Department became involved in two separate excessive speeding investigations. As part of the 2011-2013 Strategic Plan, the West Vancouver Police are focusing their attention on “High Risk Drivers” with the intent of reducing motor vehicle accidents.
High Risk Drivers are defined by the West Vancouver Police as:

  • Speeders
  • Distracted drivers
  • Impaired drivers
  • Prohibited drivers
  • Failure to utilize occupant restraint systems (seatbelts) and
  • Intersection offences
During a speed monitoring campaign that consisted of monitoring vehicle speeds on the Trans Canada Highway with the use of laser radar, two vehicles were seized as the result of excessive speed.
The first incident occurred on January 11, 2012, at 10:20 pm in the 600 block of the Trans Canada Highway, where officers stopped a vehicle that was travelling at a speed of 159 km/h in a 90 Km/h zone.
The second incident occurred on January 12, 2012, just after midnight, where officers stopped a vehicle that was travelling at a speed of 168 km/h in a 90 km/h zone.
In both incidents the drivers were issued violation tickets under the Motor Vehicle Act, Section 148(1) with $368 fines attached to them. In addition, both vehicles were impounded for a seven day period. According to Mitchell Martin, the owner of Mitchells Towing, the minimum charge for a seven day vehicle impound is $326.49. This brings the minimum cost of excessive speeding, upon conviction, to $695.49.
Drivers who have one or more excessive speeding conviction also pay an ICBC Driver Risk Premium (DRP). The DRP is assessed and calculated based on offences over a three-year period, and applies to offences that occurred on or after January 1, 2008. The additional premium is paid on top of the yearly cost of auto insurance and any excessive-speeding convictions.

The West Vancouver Police Department will continue to focus their attention on “High Risk Drivers” in order to reduce preventable motor vehicle accidents and keep the roads safe.
