West Vancouver Police assist as a result of a Sulphur Fire at the CN Rail yards

 

 

On 2010 August 10 at 1445 hrs, the West Vancouver Police were requested to assist the West Vancouver Fire Department on a sulphur fire originating at the Canadian National Railway yards.

 

Upon arrival, police assisted the WVFD and EHS for a person suffering from smoke inhalation. This person was later released from the scene after an EHS examination.

 

The unified command comprised of WVPD, WVFD, CN Police, CN Rail, EHS made a request for the North Shore Emergency Management Office to use their emergency contact system to issue an alert to all area residents in the area from Capilano Rd to Garden Rd and from Marine Drive to Welch Ave.

 

Further notification was enhanced by Police from West Vancouver and the North Vancouver RCMP using loud hailers to contain the immediate area and ask area residents to secure themselves into their respective homes by closing their doors and windows.

 

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Chief Ernst of the WV Fire Rescue described the fire as an open smouldering fire and not an active fire. According to Chief Ernst the fire originated in an open sulphur car and WV Fire Rescue crews are still on scene to ensure there are no flare ups.

 

An employee from Canadian National Hazardous Materials section is presently on scene and further assessing the situation.
