Update - Missing Diver

Missing Diver UPDATE

WVPD File 2012-488

Contact Person Sgt. Paul Skelton

Phone 604-925-7300

The search for the diver who went missing in the waters off Whytecliff Park has resumed today with the assistance of the Canadian Coast Guard, Vancouver Police Department Marine Squad, and some diving colleagues of the missing male.

The missing diver was last seen by his diving partner shortly before 5:00 p.m. late yesterday afternoon, before they became separated from one another during their dive.  An extensive search of the area last night by the Canadian Coast Guard and Vancouver Police Marine Squad failed to find any trace of the missing diver.

The original West Vancouver Police Department media release is outlined below:

On January 14, 2012 at approximately 17:30 hrs the West Vancouver Police Department were advised by the Canada Coast Guard Search and Rescue centre in Victoria that they had received a report of a missing diver at Whytecliff Park, West Vancouver. The West Vancouver Police attend the scene along with Emergency Health Services.

Two experienced divers went for a dive in the waters off Whytecliff Park this afternoon.

At approximately 16:45hrs one of the divers surfaced from the dive and waited for the second diver to surface.  The second diver failed to surface and the first diver then made his way to the shore. The first diver then contacted the Canada Coast Guard.

At approximately 17:40 hrs Canada Coast Guard vessels, along with the Vancouver Police Marine squad commenced a search of the area for the missing diver.

As of 21:20 hrs the missing diver has not been located and the search of the area has been concluded.

The missing diver has been identified as a male in his sixties who resides in the Lower Mainland. The male’s family has been notified.

The West Vancouver Police Department and West Vancouver Fire and Rescue would like to thank the community for its generosity and support of the 2011 Emergency Services Toy Drive.

This year’s Toy Drive was a great success with hundreds of toys and food donations being delivered to the Family Services of the North Shore Christmas Bureau.

The community of West Vancouver has once again strongly demonstrated the importance giving and helping those in need.  A special thanks goes to the children and staff at the Cypress Corner Child Minding of the West Vancouver Aquatic Center, who brought in seven boxes of new toys for other children.

It is with pride that the West Vancouver Police and West Vancouver Fire and Rescue partner with the community and wish you all a safe and happy holiday season.
